Barker's Newsbites: Friday, June 27, 2014

Allow me to lead off today's newsbites with the following front-page newsbite:

Senate Democrats blocked Republicans on Thursday from passing two bills that would require companies to verify the legal status of people before they hire them, and stop the government from handing out child tax credits to illegal immigrants.

Republican Senator Jeff Sessions tried to get approval for the two bills after saying illegal immigration is swamping the U.S., which is leading to reduce wages for Americans and higher costs as these immigrants start improperly receiving federal tax benefits.

Sessions first tried to pass the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). That bill would require companies to verify whether possible employees are legally able to work in the country.

* SOUNDS REASONABLE TO ME...

But Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) argued that this e-verify provision was in the Senate’s broad immigration bill that passed a year ago, and said Democrats aren’t looking to negotiate passage of sections of that bill. “We are not going to take that bill apart piece by piece, as the senator from Alabama suggests,” Durbin said. “I object.”

Sessions said if the e-verify program can be accepted by Democrats in the larger bill, they should be able to approve it quickly this week.

* AGAIN... SOUNDS REASONABLE...

“If it’s so good, why don’t we bring it up and pass it now?” Sessions asked. “Why do we have to pass along with it a bill that will double the number of guest workers in the country, and would increase immigration?”

Sessions then tried to pass the Child Tax Credit Integrity Preservation Act, which would change the law to ensure illegal immigrants cannot receive child tax credit benefits. But Durbin objected again, and seemed to indicate he believes these benefits should flow to non-citizens.

“I want to make sure that working families with small children have the helping hand of our tax code,” he said. “I want to stop any fraud in any program in our tax code, but I don’t believe this bill is a balanced approach to solving the problem, and I object.”

* OUR ECONOMY IS A MESS... UNEMPLOYMENT IS UNACCEPTABLY HIGH... UNDEREMPLOYMENT IS UNACCEPTABLY HIGH... EACH YEAR WE BORROW ADDITIONAL HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS (ADDING TO THE $17 TRILLION PLUS NATIONAL DEBT) TO PAY FOR SPENDING WE CAN'T AFFORD.

* THE DEMOCRAT'S ANSWER: MORE IMMIGRATION. MORE WELFARE. MORE DEFICIT SPENDING.

* FOLKS... AMERIKA 2014 IS A SICK, SICK, SICK SOCIETY. WE'RE LIKE LEMMING RUSHING TOWARDS SUICIDE.

Durbin's comments left a stunned Sessions to note that the Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General has said $4.2 billion in child tax credits were given to illegal immigrants.

“I am flabbergasted, amazed that we would sit by and $4 billion in child tax credit payments to go out that are not justified,” he said.

* INSTITUTIONAL INSANITY...

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/381362/study-all-employment-growth-2000-went-immigrants-nro-staff

According to a major new report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), net employment growth in the United States since 2000 has gone entirely to immigrants, legal and illegal.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CIS scholars Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler found that there were 127,000 fewer working-age natives holding a job in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000, while the number of immigrants with a job was 5.7 million above the 2000 level.

The rapidity with which immigrants recovered from the Great Recession, as well as the fact that they held a disproportionate share of jobs relative to their share of population growth before the recession, help to explain their findings, the authors report.

Other significant findings include:

Because the native-born population grew significantly, but the number working actually fell, there were 17 million more working-age natives not working in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000.

The share of natives working or looking for work, referred to as labor force participation, shows the same decline as the employment rate.

(In fact, labor force participation has continued to decline for working-age natives even after the jobs "recovery" began in 2010.)

Immigrants have made gains across the labor market, including lower-skilled jobs such as maintenance, construction, and food service; middle-skilled jobs like office support and health care support; and higher skilled jobs, including management, computers, and health care practitioners.

The [over] supply of potential [American citizen] workers is enormous: 8.7 million native college graduates are not working...

* ONE... MORE... TIME...

8.7 million native college graduates are not working...

...17 million with some college [are not working...]

...and 25.3 million with no more than a high school education [are not participating in the workforce].

* BOTTOM LINE...

According to the study, 58 million working-age natives are not employed.

Camarota and Zeigler report three conclusions:

First, the long-term decline in the employment for natives across age and education levels is a clear indication that there is no general labor shortage - which is a primary justification for the large increases in immigration (skilled and unskilled) in the Schumer-Rubio bill and similar House proposals.

Second, the decline in work among the native-born over the last 14 years of high immigration is consistent with research showing that immigration reduces employment for natives.

* ESPECIALLY BLACK AMERICANS... (JUST LOOK AT THE STATS, FOLKS!)

Third, the trends since 2000 challenge the argument that immigration on balance increases job opportunities for natives.

* THE TRUTH IS...

Over 17 million immigrants arrived in the country in the last 14 years, yet native employment has deteriorated significantly.

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2014/06/breaking-mcdaniel-supporters-barred-from-reviewing-voter-rolls-in-three-mississippi-counties/

The Chris McDaniel campaign identified multiple Mississippi counties in which enough improper ballots were cast that a legal challenge to the outcome of the election is warranted. This comes after 25,000-35,000 Democrat votes helped push Thad Cochran to victory over Chris McDaniel (by 6,880 votes) in the June 24 runoff.

The McDaniel campaign has already found 1,000 examples in one county of Democrats who voted in the June 3rd primary as Democrats and then crossed over into the Republican primary this week. This is illegal and their votes should not be counted.

* WOW...

Lindsay Krout, an independent contractor working in Mississippi, was barred from reviewing voter rolls in Lafayette County Mississippi Friday morning.

Mississippi law states that the clerk must allow public viewing of the election documentation.

Lindsay said when she went to the Lafayette County courthouse this morning and was forced to wait for an hour. Then the county clerk told her the Secretary of State’s office said the county had to redact the Social Security number and addresses from the voter rolls. The clerk said it will take until Wednesday to redact the information. And, the county will charge McDaniel supporters for the extra work.

Lindsay said McDaniel supporters in Lowndes County and Lauderdale County faced similar pushback from the local officials.

(The clerks also said they would have to schedule the time so county officials could be present.)

McDaniel supporters are facing the same pushback in Stone County.

The McDaniel campaign is asking for donations and resources to investigate the voter rolls. There are reports that Governor Phil Bryant wants to certify the election on Monday.

A controversial, outspoken law professor who frequently bashes Republicans and specializes in poverty issues as a self-proclaimed champion of the poor earns $205,400 per year – for teaching one class per semester.

(*CLAP...CLAP...CLAP*)

The University of North Carolina School of Law pays Professor Gene Nichol $205,400 annually for his one class per semester workload.

(On top of his teaching salary, he receives a $7,500 stipend as director of the law school’s Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity.)

The News & Observer maintains a public database of public employee and educator salaries, and lists Nichol’s salary at $212,900. Nichol, in an email to The College Fix, confirmed the figure is accurate.

* AND WHAT IS HIS BENEFITS AND RETIREMENT PACKAGE WORTH...???

Nichol is slated to teach federal jurisdiction this fall and constitutional law in spring 2015. He told The College Fix there is nothing unusual about his compensation.

* THE SAD THING IS... HE'S NO DOUBT CORRECT.

The News & Observer lists the UNC Distinguished Professor of Law Thomas Lee Hazen’s salary at $222,000. However, he is slated to teach four classes this fall, and two in the spring. UNC Distinguished Professor of Law Sarah Elizabeth Gibson earns $200,000 annually, and has a similar workload to Nichol at one class per semester.

* HMM...

Today at UNC, Nichol runs the UNC Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, which was founded by the now-disgraced Democrat John Edwards.

The center is a self-proclaimed non-partisan, interdisciplinary institute that aims to study and mitigate poverty in North Carolina and the nation.

* "NON-PARTISAN," HUH?

(*SNORT*)

In his leadership role there, Nichol is known to use inflammatory political rhetoric. For example, on the center’s website he writes that “the scourge of debilitating poverty is the largest problem faced by the people of North Carolina – even if our political leaders ignore it, or declare, with a breathtaking stupidity, that it doesn’t exist.”

(North Carolina has a Republican-controlled majority of lawmakers.)

Yet while Nichol champions the poor – even chastising Republicans in a March News & Observer op-ed for its “unforgivable war on poor people” – it’s unclear how well he can relate to those living in poverty.

* SO... "YES-PARTISAN"... AND... "YES-HYPOCRITE" AS WELL.

His wife, chief of staff for the UNC Health Care System and the UNC School of Medicine, earns $407,000 annually.

* WOW...

Combining his and his wife’s salary, the couple makes at least $612,000 per year.

* WOW...

The Nichol family lives in a Chapel Hill home with a tax value of more than $1 million.

* IN NORTH CAROLINA...

They also own a bungalow on the beach at Emerald Isle, valued by Carteret County at more than $512,000.

(*GUFFAW*)

In the summer months, Nichol rents his four-bedroom bungalow for nearly $2,000 per week.

* NICE...

When asked by The College Fix about the large inequality between his income and the income of those in poverty, Nichol refused to respond.

President Barack Obama...asked the U.S. Congress on Thursday to approve $500 million to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

* GEEZUS... DOES IT NEVER END...?!?!

Democrats in Congress said they were pleased Obama was taking a step to back the Syrian rebels. "It is not too late to help the moderate opposition. It is not too late to help Syrians build the future they deserve," said U.S. Representative Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

* FOLKS... YOU DO UNDERSTAND THAT BOTH PARTIES ARE BY AND LARGE "WAR PARTIES." (WHILE "TEA PARTY" LIBERTARIAN-LEANING CONSTITUTIONISTS SUCH AS MYSELF BELIEVE AMERICA MUST CEASE TRYING TO BE THE "WORLD'S POLICEMAN.")

Syrian rebels fighting Assad are a disparate array of groups including the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which seized parts of northern and western Iraq in an offensive this month; Nusra Front, which is affiliated to al Qaeda; and moderate, non-ideological factions such as the Supreme Military Command.

* SO OBAMA WANTS TO FUND... ANTI-WESTERN, ANTI-AMERICAN, KHALIPHATE-SEEKING ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS.

(*CLAP...CLAP...CLAP*)

Border Patrol agents in Arizona were reportedly fired upon by a Mexican military helicopter that traveled across the border.

KVOA-TV reports that Mexican authorities were conducting a drug interdiction operation when the incident happened early Thursday morning on the Tohono O’odham Indian Nation. The Mexican chopper fired at the agents and then flew back into Mexico.

Art del Cueto, Border Patrol Tucson Sector union president, tells KVOA that they called and apologized for the incident.

* WELL... AS LONG AS THEY APOLOGIZED... RIGHT?

(*SNORT*)

* AND MEANWHILE A U.S. MARINE ROTS IN A MEXICAN JAIL AND OBAMA DOES NOT DEMAND HIS RELEASE.

Over seven frenetic days, Bill Clinton addressed corporate executives in Switzerland and Denmark, an investors’ group in Sweden and a cluster of business and political leaders in Austria. The former president wrapped up his European trip in the triumphant Spanish Hall at Prague Castle, where he shared his thoughts on energy to a Czech business summit.

His pay: $1.4 million.

* NOT BAD FOR SEVEN DAYS "WORK." A REAL "MAN OF THE PEOPLE."

That lucrative week in May 2012 offers a glimpse into the way Clinton has leveraged his global popularity into a personal fortune. Starting just two weeks after exiting the Oval Office, Clinton has delivered hundreds of paid speeches...

* BUT, FOLKS... CONSIDER... WHO ARE THESE SPEECHES FOR? WHO PAYS? BILL CLINTON IS NOT A MOVIE STAR, AN ATHELETE, OR A ROCK STAR. HE'S NOT BEING PAID OUT OF A PERCENTAGE OF ADVERTISING PROFITS...

* FOLKS... THIS IS AN CIRCULAR SCAM! IT'S A TAX LOOPHOLE! A BUSINESS PAYS CLINTON... AND THEN WRITES OFF THE EXPENSE. OH... YES... NO DOUBT THE BUSINESS GETS THE "CREDIT" FROM CLINTON FOR THE "BRIBE." ONE HAND NO DOUBT WASHES THE OTHER. BUT... ULTIMATELY THE TAXPAYER PAYS THE BILL! AGAIN... IT'S A FRIGGIN' WRITE-OFF! IT'S SUPPOSEDLY A "BUSINESS EXPENSE."

* FOLKS... IF CLINTON WERE CHARGING BROADWAY SHOW TICKET PRICES OR BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN CONCERT PRICES AND FILLING STADIUMS NO ONE COULD OR SHOULD CRITICIZE IT. BUT THIS ISN'T WHAT HE'S DOING. THIS IS INSIDER CIRCULAR BRIBERY ULTIMATELY SUBSIDIZED BY THE TAXPAYER THROUGH A CORRUPT TAX CODE.

* AS TO HIS FOREIGN SPEECHES... THAT'S JUST BASIC BRIBERY. THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER ISN'T FUNDING IT SO I DON'T GIVE A DAMN.

Bill Clinton has been paid $104.9 million for 542 speeches around the world between January 2001, when he left the White House, and January 2013, when Hillary stepped down as secretary of state, according to a Washington Post review of the family’s federal financial disclosures. Although slightly more than half of his appearances were in the United States, the majority of his speaking income, $56.3 million, came from foreign speeches, many of them in China, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom, the Post review found.

The financial industry has been Clinton’s most frequent sponsor. The Post review showed that Wall Street banks and other financial services firms have hired Clinton for at least 102 appearances and paid him a total of $19.6 million.

* DISGUSTING...
